Special Circumstances

Assisted Collection Service

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council provides an Assisted Collection Service for residents who are unable to present their bins for collection due to age, disability or a medical condition.

This service is available where:

  • The resident lives alone and is unable to present their bin(s) for collection; or
  • There is no other person living at the property who is reasonably able to present the bin(s) for collection.

Applications are subject to assessment and may require supporting evidence.

Approval is also subject to a risk assessment to ensure there is safe access for collection crews and vehicles. Access routes and bin storage locations must be maintained in a safe condition and provide adequate vehicle access and turning space where required.

Assisted Collections are reviewed periodically and may be withdrawn where eligibility criteria are no longer met or safe access cannot be maintained.

Data Protection

Any personal or medical information provided as part of an application will be used solely for the purpose of assessing eligibility for this service and will be processed in accordance with UK data protection legislation.

Additional Waste Capacity

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council recognises that some households may require additional waste or recycling capacity due to larger household size or exceptional circumstances.

Applications for additional capacity may be considered where:

  • Six or more permanent residents live at the property; or
  • A member of the household has a medical condition that generates additional household waste.

Applications are assessed on an individual basis and supporting evidence may be required.

Additional Capacity Available

Where an application is approved, residents may be eligible for:

  • One 360 litre Blue Recycling Bin (current charge £53); or
  • One additional 240 litre Black Residual Waste Bin (current charge £69), where there is an approved medical need.

Please note:

  • A larger household (six or more permanent residents) may qualify for a 360 litre Blue Recycling Bin.
  • An additional Black Residual Waste Bin is only available where there is an approved medical need.
  • Approval must be obtained before purchasing any additional or larger bin.
  • Purchasing a bin does not automatically entitle it to be included in the Council's collection service.
  • Only bins authorised under the Council's approved policy will be emptied as part of the normal collection service.
  • Additional capacity is reviewed periodically and may be withdrawn where eligibility criteria are no longer apply.
