The Re-rooting Our Past in the Future project has delivered a major programme of restoration, conservation and visitor enhancements across Castlewellan Historic Demesne. Restoration works are continuing at The Grange, with the buildings expected to become operational in autumn 2026.
Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project has helped protect and celebrate the Demesne’s internationally important natural, built and cultural heritage.
Key achievements include:
- Restoration and reopening of the Annesley Walled Garden.
- Conservation and enhancement of the internationally significant Castlewellan Arboretum.
- Restoration of historic fountains, stonework, glasshouses and other important garden features.
- Improvements to paths, planting, drainage and access within the Gardens and Rhododendron Wood.
- Development of new interpretation, signage, tree labels, visitor maps and guided tours.
- Delivery of biodiversity and conservation activity, including red squirrel monitoring, bat surveys, bird recording, fungi identification and wildlife habitat improvements.
- Engagement of children, schools, teachers, families and community groups through heritage and biodiversity workshops, outdoor learning and public events.
- Delivery of training and skills development for staff, volunteers, apprentices and project participants.
- Establishment of the Friends of Castlewellan Arboretum, providing a strong foundation for continued volunteering, community involvement and support for the Gardens.
- Increased public awareness of the history, biodiversity and international significance of Castlewellan Historic Demesne.
Volunteers played a central role in the project, supporting planting, garden preparation, conservation work, events, visitor welcome activity and community engagement.
Despite the challenges of delivering complex restoration works within a historic and environmentally sensitive landscape, and the significant impact of Storm Éowyn, the project has created a stronger and more resilient foundation for the future management of Castlewellan Historic Demesne.
The investment has strengthened Castlewellan’s visitor offer and created new opportunities for tourism, education, biodiversity, volunteering and community participation, ensuring that this important heritage destination can be enjoyed by residents and visitors for generations to come.
