Primary school children in Lislea and Kilkeel took part in Beesafe educational days between Monday 27 and Friday 31 January, when they were able to experience an array of everyday health and safety scenarios.
The educational days, organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and funded by the Public Health Agency, were aimed at teaching the children how to keep themselves safe and avoid potentially dangerous situations. Five different workshops were delivered by representatives from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Southern Health and Social Care Trust, PSNI, Translink and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service. These workshops included: Home Accident Prevention, Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing, Internet Safety, Bus Safety and Fire Safety in the Home.
Beesafe educational days offer schools an innovative way of accessing the wealth of knowledge held within these vital agencies in a fun-filled way. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Terry Andrews said, “This event is a great example of how agencies are working together across Newry, Mourne and Down to achieve a successful outcome. I know that the children and teachers have benefited from taking part in the workshops and trust that this will stand them in good stead as they move from primary into secondary education.”
Colette Rogers, Head of Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement (southern area) said,
“All of us want our children to stay safe, but also to have the freedom to explore, have fun and develop, so this initiative helps educate and empower kids to take simple steps to look after themselves. Whether it’s reducing the risk of accidents or looking after their wellbeing, this programme equips participants with some key life skills to stay safe and keep well.”
