The Environmental Health Department works to protect the environment and monitor air quality in the area.
The Council checks local air to make sure it meets national standards.
If pollution is likely to go above these limits, an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) is declared.
Newry has two AQMAs:
- Newry (Urban Centre) – for annual nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels
- Newry (Canal Street) – for 24-hour small particle (PM10) levels

Smoke Control
Under the Clean Air (Northern Ireland) Order 1981, the Council can set up Smoke Control Areas.
If you live in one, it is illegal to burn unauthorised fuels such as coal, turf, or wood. To use a fire you must:
- Only use an authorised appliance that meets the rules
- Only burn fuels approved for open fireplaces

Smoke Issues
The Council can take action if smoke from factories, businesses, or homes causes a problem for the neighbourhood.
Garden Bonfires
Bonfires are not banned, but they can be a problem. A bonfire is considered a problem if it:
There is no general prohibition on garden bonfires. However, smoke from bonfires can cause a statutory nuisance if it unreasonably and substantially interferes with the use or enjoyment of neighbouring property or is prejudicial to health.
Each complaint is assessed on its individual circumstances, taking account of factors such as the frequency, duration, intensity and impact of the smoke. Where a statutory nuisance is found to exist, the Council may take appropriate enforcement action.
