Downpatrick, Rowallane and Slieve Croob District Electoral Areas (DEAs) have teamed up with the Carers Support Service for the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust (SEHSCT), to deliver creative cookery sessions for adult carers, hosted by Chef David Lee from the renowned Fired Restaurant, Killough.
Carers look after people with a whole host of conditions who have had to shield throughout the pandemic. For this reason, adult carers were often cut off from others and had little opportunity to meet or even have a chat. Conscious of the need for carers to be able to take a break from their responsibilities, relax and meet like-minded people, the DEA’s and Carers Support Service approached Chef David Lee to develop the creative cooking sessions.
During the session’s, participants had the opportunity learn new cooking skills and make tasty Chinese inspired foods. At the conclusion of the project each participant was presented with an apron, recipe booklet and a basket steamer to continue to hone their cooking techniques.
Speaking at the presentation, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Cathy Mason said, “Mental Health is a topic that I feel very strongly about and appreciate the impact isolation and loneliness can have on individuals. This project provided an opportunity for adult carers to meet new people, develop new skills and have a welcome diversion from their responsibilities. I am delighted that the DEA’s and SEHSCT in association with Fire Restaurant developed this much needed project.
“From speaking with participants today, they clearly enjoyed taking part, as they met new friends, reduced their stress and developed new culinary skills that they can continue to use at home. Initiatives such as this are essential to reduce social/rural isolation and contribute to improving people’s general health and wellbeing, and such initiatives are to be welcomed.”
